All in the Family was a very successful and controversial show. It also had a varied audience. Liberal-minded people watched the show to laugh at Archie and to see how things had changed. While less open-minded people agreed with Archie's racist and ignorant ways.

All in the Family also spawned a couple different television shows. Archie's next door neighbors, the Jeffersons - ended up 'moving on up to the East Side' with their television show "The Jeffersons." Bea Arthur also appeared on the show as Edith's cousin, Maude. She was a great source of conflict with Archie with her liberal opinions. She must have impressed audiences, because "Maude" got her own show in 1972.
