To stay healthy, a bird needs exercise, a clean cage, free time, and most of all a well-balanced and varied diet. The most basic element of this diet is a well mixed bird seed or a good brand of pellets. If feeding a seed diet, be sure to find one that has a good mix of Canary Grass Seed and various types of millet, plus a small amount of other seed such as oat, hemp and niger seed. There are also fortified seed mixtures available in which the seed is enriched with vitamins and nutrients.

Unfortunately, when fed a seed mixture, birds are able to pick and choose what they want. This often means that they avoid some seeds, thus limiting their diet. Another option available today is to feed your bird pellets. Pellets are formulated specifically to provide the essential vitamins and minerals that a bird needs. They are often also considered a healthier, lower fat diet than seeds.
