The Bald Eagle is one of America's national propaganda symbols. In the past, bald meant that a person had white hair and did not imply that someone was bald under todays meaning of the word. So this bird should really be called the white haired eagle. But Bald just sounds better, darn it.

The Bald Eagle is an endangered species and is the only unique eagle found in North America, all other eagles have common decendents from Europe and Asia. The Bald Eagles' range extends from Alaska and Canada to Northern Mexico. There are an estimated 50,000 Bald Eagles in the United States with 80 percent found in Alaska.

Bald Eagle nests can reach the size of 5 feet in diameter, and they use the same nest year after year. With time some nests can grow to 9 feet in diameter, weighing two tons. This creature reaches maturity between 4 or 5 years of age, and like many people, this eagle mates for life. If one of the mated birds die then the other will accept a new mate. During their breeding season the Bald Eagle couple protects the nest territory from other eagles or predators.
