There are only 6 species of lizards found in North America as most species are more tropical in nature. Lizards superficially resemble salamanders (which are amphibians), but there are a number of clear differences. Lizards have scales, whereas salamanders have moist, soft skin. In addition, lizards have claws and external ear openings, while salamanders do not.

There are many species of Lizard suitable as a companion. They come from a diverse range of habitats. Cool Companions has suitable enclosures for all species of Lizard. These notes are basic requirements; discussion is needed regarding the specific needs of each species you may wish to keep.

Lizards require places to hide in their enclosure, without these areas your animal will become stressed. Stress is noticeable by a lack of appetite and your animal becoming less active. This is when sickness might occur.

There are a variety of substrates which can enhance the look of your enclosure, while being beneficial to your animal. There are some harmful substrates also; it is best to check before embarking on your enclosure beautification programme. Whichever substrate is used your animal must be kept clean.
