Parrots comprise a wide variety of species inhabiting many parts of the world. Parrots live in areas ranging from the Amazon rain forest of South America to the Outback of Australia. Parrots are primarily located along the equatorial regions of the world.

Parrots range in size from the small Parrotlet to the very large Scarlet Macaw. They also posses a wide range of feather color and arrangement. A few parrot species have feather markings that differ between male and female. While most species look identical making it impossible to identify the sex of a bird. In these cases a blood (DNA) test or surgical inspection is required to identify the sex (unless of course the bird lays an egg).

Parrots posses the ability to produce a wide range of sounds by varying the shape of their airway. Many learn to reproduce human speech and other sounds found in their environment. Some species are so accomplished that they can reproduce sounds identical to the real thing. For example, take the African Grey that drives their owners crazy by reproducing the sound of the telephone.

The average life span of parrots varies greatly from species to species. Typically the larger the parrot, the longer the life span. Some parrots can live upwards of seventy years in captivity. Parrots have a wide range of personalities from the dependent nature of the Cockatoo to the independent nature of an Amazon. All are highly intelligent flock animals that crave attention and companionship. They are highly inquisitive and intelligent creatures. Parrots love attention and can bond very strongly with people.
